The Stig
One of the best silver linings to life with cancer is the euphoria of a clear scan result. We were treated to this on Monday - a year after they had found a stray tumour growing in his right adrenal gland. This week we are mainly walking on air!
The care at The Christie was as good as ever. Every time we go, there's a new slick bit added onto the hospital - and the work inside is just as impressive.
Prof Hawkins told us the good news less than half an hour after Quent left the scanner. He had the radiologist lined up to look at the scans straight away (and 'after hours') - yet again. At this point, we should give credit to the Radiologist, whom we've never met and never thanked. In nearly 8 years of scanning we've never even heard his name, so I'm going to call him the Stig; the mysterious man who works at speed!
We are very grateful to Prof Hawkins and the Stig. It's really lovely knowing the results of the scan straight away - the drive home is fuelled by joy and love (and a tank of diesel, of course).
Of course The Stig's work is getting easier, because there's less and less to look at. Quent has had one kidney, two adrenal glands and parts of both lungs removed... which cuts down the organs to be inspected. Not that it seems to affect Quent's stamina or zest for life. He's still cycling, kayaking and climbing mountains - and that's just in the last fortnight!
I'm sure there's some clever way to end this post with a quip about Jeremy Clarkson, but I just can't see it right now...

Great news - and yet again a great blog, love to all - Richie and family.
Lovely to hear so much joy :)
Happy Easter to you all, Jo xx
I'm a bit late on the uptake here - but still; brilliant news. Do stress to Quent that there is no need to assist the Radiologists speed by having more bodily parts removed. You can at times take being a boy scout too far...........
Love Jenny H and Tim H. xxxxx
I would like to say how inspiring your blog has been to me. My husband is currently part way through IL2 treatment at The Christie which I found through Internet research as local hospitals wouldn't treat him. Could you mention it on Smartpatients to give hope to others? I hope you don't mind an interloper. You could consider publishing your blog as a book. Best wishes to you and your family. Christine
I would have emailed you but there's no link available. Christine
Hello Christine - thank you for your lovely comment ('interlopers' = readers and are very welcome!). I am so pleased that you and your husband found your way to The Christie and do hope the treatment is doing its stuff. Stay strong; it's hard to go through but Quent would undoubtedly say it was worth it. Please feel free to mention this blog on Smartpatients or anywhere else that might help others. (Might be easier for you to say it was helpful, if you have a moment, rather than for me to self publicise.) Quent has another scan on Monday and we are hopeful it will be clear - he looks ridiculously healthy!
Hi, good luck with the scan. I will mention your blog on smartpatients then I'm sure it will give a lot of people hope. Just got date for cycle 3 it will be in October. My husband has no adrenal glands either lost them both with the kidney so he's also a tricky case for prof. Is your scan at the Christie. We are there Monday seeing prof. My email is camorey@aol.com Christine
