Desert Island Discs

We have asked a friend of ours to do a "Desert Island Discs" interview with Quentin. She is doing a broadcast journalism course and would make a great Kirsty Young replacement in years to come. Quentin has pondered for hours over which 8 records to take with him.

Helen has known Quentin for a few years but wants as much material as possible, so I had the idea of asking you all for some anecdotes and / or thoughts on Quentin for her to use. Things he's done, his approach to life etc etc. I'm sure you've all heard the programme. Quent thought this was a brilliant idea... for a few moments. And then he looked a bit less sure ;o))

So, maybe I should encourage you to think of Oakley as your main audience. Feel free to email me on hwebbhome@gmail.com if you think discretion is required! But do please send them in. Even if we can't use all of them in the recording, we'll enjoy reading them and can drip feed them to Oakley as he grows up... The U, PG, 15 and 18 collections!

We hope to make a great recording which shows what a fantastic, fun and talented person Quent is - but more realistic entries are also welcome. (Just kidding, Quent!)

Evening Webbs
I have some very good memories of Quent and me running "The PowerHouse"disco many years ago, mainly through the modern romantic era, but I think the favourite times were when we played "Temptation" by Heaven 17.
We would both egg the crowd on as we stood stamping on the record boxes in our red and blue pixie boots. Great stuff.

Best wishes

A few anecdotes...

Quent and I were on a ski-lift in France on a cold Monday morning. Quent produced his mobile phone and called his boss to ask if he could have the week off.....

Breaking into our youth hostel after we had all stayed in the pub after the kerfew, then getting caught by the warden.....

Quent arriving at our wedding in the middle of rural Ireland, having hitch-hiked his way to the hotel (needless to say, he hadn't booked a room either !).....

The rest of us on a stag do in Brighton, when Quent phoned to say that he had arrived in Bournemouth, and where exactly was the hotel... and a similar storey when we were in the cinema in Watford and Quent phoned to say that he'd arrived in Leicester Square and which pub where we in ?

I'm sure there will be plenty more.....

Quentin has always been a hero to my children even before the time he gave them a HUGE toy elephant, bigger than they were themselves.

One night he arrived in the midlands unannounced, broke into our house and the first we knew about it was when we came downstairs in the morning to find him curled up asleep on the lounge floor! He was always an unconventional visitor!

I went to Australia with him for a few weeks to visit our brother Duncan. I was quite prepared to be accosted and detained by the customs men because he was wearing a very bright pair of yellow dungarees, the famous blue and red pixie boots and his hair was dyed orange one side and green the other!

We stopped off in Bali on the way home and I had been told "Whatever you do don't get hospitalised in Bali - fly out to Jakarta. On our first day there Quent managed to catch a sea urchin while swimming. As his hand and arm began to swell up I had visions of missing the island altogether. However, a hotel security guard came to our rescue. He drove off and came back to us holding out a twig saying "Very good Balinese medicine. You touch this, it be fine." Believe it or not he was right! It turned out to be a freshly picked aloe vera plant.
(I won't mention the motor cycle fiasco, Quent!)

Many, many happy and hilarious adventures!

So many stories, but to sum Quent up briefly:

He's the guy you tell people at work about, the guy who doesn't care what people think and the guy who just wants everyone to have fun.

I think a part of all of us would love to be like Quent, if only it wasn't so damned dangerous having that much fun.

Sadly I personal dont have any stories on Quentin (You have always been so well behaved around me) which is such a shame! however having read all the little stories (many I've heard before)and hearing many others through John & the boys. I can only say that you have an amazing gift and that is to make people laugh and smile..
See you soon Love AM xx

A great blog - really like the desert island discs idea - here's a couple of thursday evening venture activities I'm sure he'll recall...

Abseiling off the block of flats (was it 8 storeys?), down onto the roofs of the neighbouring shops, walk round, get in the lift and do it again... I distinctly remember the challenge being to see if, halfway down, we could run across and reach the front side of the building. Spiderman makes it look too easy.

Abseiling (again), this time off the pedestrian bridge near the Comet building/Ricky train stn down onto the pavement before clambering up the bank. After quite a few successful attempts, a couple of Police officers approached from the stn direction. In his inimitable way, Quent, in his leaders' uniform and tie welcomes them over and near enough invites them to have a go. They were concerned that we may distract drivers and cause an accident. Seems they expected us to bolt, as they had police cars positioned at all the other exits to the field on the other side of the bridge!

Although I wasn't there - I'm sure I heard something about obtaining a small jet engine (or something equally loud!) and starting it in the HQ car park...

Happy days!

Best Wishes,

Dave Hirst

Probably a little late for the disc, but I thought I might mention a couple of thoughts-
I still have a vision of Quents car, with twenty peoples luggage, and probaby around ten prople stuffed (legs out the sun roof in some cases)in it driving around Amsterdam looking for a youth hostel. Better forget about what the speed bumps did to the bottom of the car- not to mention the theives that night!Pppr car got a pretty rough deal that day!
